机场是最令人激动的地方,它承载了我们所有人的旅行渴望。但是,为了应对不断提高的各种需求和安保要求,大多数机场都呈现出零碎化趋势,导致机场拥挤而混乱,远不能实现自身潜力。多伦多皮尔逊机场正试图避免这种情况。到2015年,机场预计年接待旅客将超过2900万,远远超过其现有两个航站楼的能力。因此,机场找到了SOM以及Adamson Associates和Moshe Safdie,要求设计一个新的主航站楼,并为皮尔逊的机场、维护以及货运设施设计分阶段再开发规划。
项目的核心建筑是新月形的航站楼,包含售票和行李认领区域,从中心伸展开来的四个中央大厅将容纳商店和77个登机口。自然光和可见外景指引旅客穿过各个区域。长条天窗排列于售票站之间,为出发旅客提供指引,并为弧形候机厅提供了视觉上的韵律。托运好行李后,旅客将穿过玻璃地板的廊桥到达登机门,其间经过一系列混凝土支墩,这些支墩为候机厅的翼状屋顶提供支撑。机场的装饰采用公开选拔,Sol Lewitt、Jonathan Borofsky、Ingo Maurer、Katherina Grosse等众多艺术家入选,为机场提供了明亮、缤纷的艺术作品。
