Godrej Garden City

SOM led a multidisciplinary team for the design of Godrej Garden City, a massive mixed-use development. Situated on 105 hectares of land about three kilometers outside of the historic center of Ahmedabad, the plan called for residential, commercial, retail, and institutional space totaling 2.4 million square meters. The project was particularly designed to engage India’s young, globally focused population.

As part of ongoing growth around Ahmedabad, the project was designed to become a model for sustainable development in India. The layout is organized around a grand boulevard inspired by the world’s great streets but reconceived to reflect local customs. The boulevard is complemented by verdant gardens and pedestrian paths. Collectively, these elements deliver a strong sense of place and community.

As a testament to the project's commitment to sustainability, Godrej Garden City was chosen for a global program developed by the Clinton Foundation and U.S. Green Building Council, known as Climate Positive Development Program. Roughly a decade after design completion, the development received Green Residential Society Platinum Certification, the highest rating for residential communities, from the Indian Green Building Council. Godrej Garden City is the largest township in India to receive this designation, and is now home to more than 1,500 families.
